Down the Turquoise Trail

Took a drive down a scenic route between Santa Fe and Albuquerque this morning. First stop was up the road to the top of Sandia Peak. A cable car goes up one side, and the road up the other side. Great ride- elevation increased from 7000 feet to 10550 or so. We passed maybe 10 intrepid souls on bicycles riding up.  And not a one was walking along pushing his bike- they were all riding... Whew.

Typical terrain back down on the main road:

Madrid, along the way, was an abandoned mining town in 1970, when a bunch of 1960's college aged kids (hippie types, I guess) discovered it. Cleaned it up, stayed, and turned it into
a lovely artsy community:

  1. I like the art community pictures.
How do they pronounce Madrid? Like in Spain or in Missouri?

    1. Like Missouri. MAD-rid. Accent on the first syllable.

    2. Glad you like the pictures of their community. It was lovely. I think maybe I had a few additional; I will check, and add them if so.
There were a few other towns along that road, that had not been refurbished like Madrid was, and they were just weathered wood buildings, deteriorating badly. You could tell Madrid had been the same until a bunch of enthusiastic kids from Haight Ashbury showed up in 1970. I loved it.

  2. They are artists, and I on the other hand can't even keep my thumb out of some of the pictures.
